Parno Graszt Plays L.A.

Parno Graszt, the Hungarian band whom Songlines magazine called “the source of Gypsy music”, performed for several hundred fans at Los Angeles’ Skirball Cultural Center on Thursday.

Band members József Oláh (vocals, guitar, tambura) Viktor Oláh (vocals, guitar, dance) Sándor Horváth (vocals, spoons, dance), János Jakocska (vocals, guitar), Mária Balogh (vocals, dance), Krisztián Oláh (accordion), János Oláh (double bass) and István Németh (oral bass, churn) brought the audience to their feet with numbers such as Menni, menni, muszáj menni, Az a szép, az a szép and Gelem, gelem.
 
The concert is part of a tour of California that also included shows in Oakland, Chico and Berkeley. It is the second time the band has come to the United States to perform.
 
The Skirball Cultural Center is a Jewish cultural institution that seeks “to explore the connections between four thousand years of Jewish heritage and the vitality of American democratic ideals”.
